There are tons of information online on how to drive targeted traffic to your website, but most of it doesn’t talk about the value of having a presentable website as a pre-requisite. Getting visitors to your website is important, but what’s even more important is to have them stay once they are on it. Your site’s appearance plays a major role in not only retaining the visitors but also making them come back. It’s a brutal reality because visitors will make a determination about your site very quickly – in about 3 seconds. What really sucks is you will never get another chance. A badly designed site, with crappy navigation structure, will very rarely outperform a site that excels in those areas. So obviously it’s worth it to try and get these things right with your site. Ok, we’ll share some more insights about design that will help you with your visitors.

Keeping it as simple as possible and staying away from clutter is a simple web design tip to remember. Sure, it’s fun to use cool Photoshop effects or use flash based animation on your site, but keeping it simple without all that business will pay off when it comes to the long run. Designing a site that’s confusing and full of clutter will simply put off your site’s visitors. Instead, create an appealing website design that allows visitors to easily find what they’re looking for by organizing all the information on the page. Also, you’ll want to create a delicate balance between text and visual since you want them to complement one another, and if your text overpowers the visual, or vice versa, then you haven’t done your job correctly. Don’t forget to make your site load faster by optimizing your images.

Nowadays, it makes sense to keep the flash away from your site. Generally speaking, a website that is built with flash takes a longer time to open, since it has to load. Fact: search engine spiders cannot read flash – end of story, no SEO, no rankings. If there’s a slow connection, people will not wait because you know how impatient online readers are. When flash was first introduced, it was really cool and all that – its worn off. Even though they can be impressive and fancy, they can get irritating at times. If your only goal is to look cool and impress (and not make money), then by all means, get flash. But if you want to have an optimized site, one that converts, reaches the maximum amount of people – then you will kill your flash site.

Remember that you’ll always want to space out your content so that it doesn’t look like a bunch of unreadable text in one location. You’ll want to try to keep your content in small chunks that you can read and also to use lots of white space between your page’s text. In general, people read differently on the web when you compare it to how they read offline. Readers must be able to can your content. Therefore, designing a successful site isn’t as difficult as it may sound. Just remember the above ideas and make sure to take care of the small things. It is easy to design a site, but the difficulty comes in creating a site that is interesting to visitors.
